A new opera by Eric Sweeney will be premiered in May

unnamed-5Created by Eric Sweeney and Mark Roper, and presented by Theatre Royal Productions, The Invader is inspired by the parable of The Bacchae, from the great Greek playwright Euripides.

The opera is directed by Ben Barnes and tells the story of human folly and divine anger, carrying the audience on a journey of transformation:

‘From the darkness which lies beyond the walls of our world, the Invader stealthily emerges and waits to be admitted. A charismatic figure, at once gentle and terrible, after whom nothing can ever be the same!’

The production features an international cast, including Telman Guzevsky, Joe Corbett, Natasha Jouhl, Alison Browner, and an ensemble led by the RTÉ ConTempo Quartet.

The performance takes place in the Theatre Royal Waterford on 23 and 24 May 2014 and forms part of 1100th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the city of Waterford in 914. The opera will also be performed at Wexford Opera House on 30 May.
