Enda Bates and Sean Clancy receive the RTÉ lyric fm/IMRO Mentored Composition Bursary

RTÉ lyric fm and the Irish Music Rights Association (IMRO) have announced that Enda Bates and Seán Clancy are the recipients of their Mentored Composition Bursary for 2012. The bursary will provide both composers with the opportunity to gain experience in writing for an orchestra, through the composition of a work for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra (NSO). They will be mentored throughout the composition process by Lyric fm’s composer-in-residence for 2011/2012, Linda Buckley. Both Bates and Clancy will be given the opportunity to gain the experience of preparing the scores for the orchestra and participating in a workshop and recording of their work with the NSO.

Enda Bates completed a PhD in Composition at Trinity College, Dublin in 2010. He is a composer, musician, producer and lecturer at TCD. He is also a founding member of the Spatial Music Collective. He has received various commissions and awards including the 37th Florilege Vocal de Tours, the 2008 Irish National Choir of the Year competition, the 2009 Gaudeamus Music Prize shortlist and the 2010 Música Viva Competition.

 

Seán Clancy

Seán Clancy is currently undertaking a PhD in composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire. From 2010 to 2012 he is the apprentice composer-in-residence for the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. He is also a founding member of the Irish Composer’s Collective. His music has been performed both nationally and internationally and has also featured in festivals including The Edinburgh Fringe festival and Crash Ensemble’s Free State III and VI.
