Greg Caffrey wins composition award

The Belfast-based composer won first prize in the Italian composition competition, Concurso Counterpoint, for his work guitar work Takemitsu’s Dream.

The Concurso Counterpoint is an open competition for solo flute, keyboard, guitar and duo or electronic works involving these instruments.

The work will be performed as part of the “Composer’s Voice” series at Jan Hus Church in Manhattan, New York, on 27 January 2013.

Written in 2008, Takemitsu’s Dream pays homage to the 20th Century Japanese composer and, in the words of the composer, “exchanges the motor rhythms and relentlessness of some of my earlier works for guitar with a sense of space, … a flexibility and fluidity of line and an approach to colour and texture that reflects my greatest admiration for the Japanese composer.”

Greg Caffrey’s work for flute and guitar, The Uses of Not was also awarded honours in the same competition and will also be performed in a series of concerts in Italy next month.
