CMC Library Update for September and October 2014

Abstract topographic map

This update from the library features some of the works added to its collection. During September and October, works from 20 different composers were added to the CMC online library catalogue. These include solo instrumental, ensemble, electro-acoustic, vocal, choral and orchestral works.

Rhona Clarke (1958-) The Small Hours
Premiered by Dermot Dunne (acc) with video on 27 April 2014 at Concorde: Up Close with Music, RHA Gallery, Dublin.
This is a collaboration with artist Marie Hanlon.
“The music is dark and slow moving expressing something of the unreality associated with the small hours. A sense of searching pervades the visual imagery, its fragmented sequences requiring the viewer to find points of connection.”

Michael Doherty (1983-) An Irish Suite
Premiered by RIAM Cello Ensemble in October 2014 at the Cello Biennale, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Gerry Murphy (1947-) Battles in the Kingdom of Ossory - Ros Tapestry Panel 5
Premiered by Lise de la Salle (pf) on 28 September 2014 at New Ross Piano Festival, St. Mary’s Church, New Ross, Co. Wexford.
“For those who left in 1914–18, and did not return.”

Ailís Ní Ríain (1974-) When I die, you can do what you want
Premiered by Elaine Clark (vn) and video on 26 January 2014 at Concorde Up Close with Music, RHA Gallery, Dublin.
This is a suite for solo cello to accompany the play by Stephen MacDonald. Video by Bosnian video artist Adela Jusic.

Emma O’Halloran (1985-) Physical Geography
Premiered by Quinn Collins (turntable) and Loadbang Ensemble on 20 May 2014 at Princeton Sound Kitchen, Princeton University, USA.

Martin O’Leary (1963-) In Desperate Music Wound
Premiered by NUI Maynooth Ladies Choir, conductor David Connolly on 10 April 2014 at the Aula Maxima, NUI Maynooth, Co. Kildare.
This piece is a setting of the poem ‘A Crazed Girl’ by William Butler Yeats.

Norah Constance Walsh (1973-) It Takes Time
Premiered by Duo Sincronia: Jesús Núnez Gonzalez (ssax), Noellia Sierra Domínguez (pf) on 19 November 2013 at Conservatorio Superior de Música “Manuel Castillo” de Sevilla, Spain.
“The instruments interact to produce a sometimes reflective, sometimes lively, but always passionate dialogue.”

Derek Ball (1949-) Night
"Night is, as faithfully as I can manage it, the musical and dramatic realisation of a very vivid dream. At the time of writing I’m happily married and my wife is very much alive. Not so in this dream. No amateur psychoanalysis please!”

Hugh Martin Boyle (1984-) Sing no More
