DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama marks the centenary of composer Joseph Groocock’s birth

Joseph Groocock (1913–97) was a composer and well respected teacher at the DIT Conservatory and Trinity College, Dublin whose life-long study of Bach’s works inspired many musicians.

The conservatory celebrates the composer’s work on 13 November with a talk and lunchtime concert at the John Field Room, NCH, Dublin. The concert takes place as part of the conservatory’s series Afterlight, a series of vocal and instrumental chamber music concerts performed by DIT Conservatory staff.

Two of Groocock’s works will be performed, his Recorder Sonata and String Quartet, performed by Laoise O’Brien (recorder), Pádhraic Ó Cuinneagáin (piano), and the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet. The concert will also include Bach’s Cantata BWV 82 with counter-tenor Stephen Wallace and Catherina Lemoni-O’Doherty (harpsichord). The concert will also be preceded with a talk by Andrew Robinson, Groocock’s son-in-law at 12.30pm.

The first concert in the series on 12 November marks the centenary of Benjamin Britten, who was born a day apart from Joseph Groocock in November 1913.
