Jennifer Walshe performs with Arts Foundation Award shortlisted artists in London

Composer/performer Jennifer Walshe will join three other experimental sound artists and composers for a concert of avant-garde music at the Southbank Centre in London. Titled the ‘New Experimentalists’, the four performers are each nominees of the Arts Foundation Award 2014, established in 1991 with the aim of supporting artists in under-recognised artistic areas, such as experimental music, arts journalism and materials innovation. The artists were chosen by a panel including Brian Eno, Sound and Music’s Head of Programming Richard Whitelaw and Café Oto’s Hamish Dunbar.

Performing alongside Walshe will be Richard Skelton premiering his ‘sound collage’ recordings, Lina Lapelyte’s new work Candy Shop and Rie Nakajima, who creates sound from a combination of kinetic devices, audio materials and found objects. Walshe herself is best known for her subversion of the distinctions between composer, performer and audience: her works often include alternative approaches to scoring and participation, and projects such as the ‘art collective’ Grupat, which saw her assume nine alter-ego ‘members’ of the group. Her live performances are centred around vocals, in particular extended techniques, and incorporate improvisation.
