Curated by composer Ian Wilson, the Spring 2014 Salon series takes place in the Kevin Barry Room, National Concert Hall and features an international mix of solo and ensemble performers playing works by a range of composers from around the Island of Ireland and living overseas.
An avid supporter of new music and work by Irish composers, pianist Matthew Schellhorn will present a programme of works by four Irish composers on 28 May at 6pm. The works are Ian Wilson’s Verschwindend, Seán Clancy’s Thirteen Minutes of Music on the Subject of the Transformation of Things, Gráinne Mulvey’s Steel-grey Splinters, and the premiere of a new work, Serein, by Linda Buckley.
Born in Yorkshire in 1977, Matthew Schellhorn studied in Manchester and Cambridge. His teachers included Peter Hill and Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen. He has given recitals in many major venues throughout the UK, including the Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room. He has been guest soloist at several international festivals and has performed live on BBC Radio 3 and Radio France. He is a prominent performer of new music and has given numerous territorial and world premieres. Recent commissions have included a collection of studies by Nicola LeFanu and six miniatures by Tim Watts, Michael Zev Gordon, Cecilia McDowall, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Colin Riley and Jeremy Thurlow. In 2012, he gave the world premiere of Ian Wilson’s Flags and Emblems with the Ulster Orchestra at the Belfast Festival at Queen’s. Schellhorn is also a successful collaborative artist. His 2008 disc with the Soloists of the Philharmonia Orchestra, Messiaen: Chamber Works (Signum Classics SIGCD126), received positive reviews on both sides of the Atlantic and was awarded an AllMusic Classical Editors’ Favourite. Recent releases include Ian Wilson: Stations (Diatribe Records DIACD0016) and Mulvey: Akanos (Navona Records NV5943).
