The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra premieres a new piano concerto by Deirdre Gribbin on 25 May
With The Binding of the Years, Deirdre Gribbin looks to explore the role of the soloist – in this case RTÉ NSO Associate Artist Finghin Collins – and the concerto in twenty-first century music. For the 25-minute work, she takes inspiration from an Aztec exhibition, where works of art and sculpture transformed themselves into music in her mind, and a fascination with a world we know little about. Equating the Aztec ritual of fire and light called the New Fire Ceremony with the Northern Irish peace processions and unification of people through light as a symbol for peace, The Binding of the Years casts the soloist in the role of torchbearer.
The Binding of the Years was commissioned by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. The concert will be conducted by Alan Buribayev and includes music by Janáček and Tchaikovsky.
The concert takes place at the National Concert Hall on 25 May at 8:00pm. Deirdre Gribbin will also take part in a pre-concert conversation at 7:00pm with Finghín Collins at the National Concert Hall. For further information and booking, please visit www.nch.ie.
