Fractal Music Dublin's Synthesis III at the IFI
Fractal Music Dublin will present the third event on 15 January in their Synthesis series, a showcase-style screening of specially selected Irish and international audiovisual works.
Curated by composer Anna Murray and musician Philip Lawson, the series places fixed-media audiovisual pieces, which often struggle to find a home in concert settings, into a cinema at the Irish Film Institute. The works selected have a strong connection between visuals and music, and unlike most cinema presentations, neither takes precedent over the other. This month's Synthesis is a continuation of their recent explorations into live dance and movement with Perpetual Motion, and includes pieces that feature or respond to dance and physical movement in some way, however direct or abstract.
The event will see the world premiere screening of a new work by Irish intermedia artist Derek Foott, created especially for Synthesis, which according to the composer, "explores the layering, repetition and manipulation of both audio and video source content. Using one short audio sample, and documented footage of improvised movement from dance artist Laura Murphy, the work examines shifting sonorities and physical gestures". The event will also see a work from Irish-based German artist Daniel Franke, entitled unnamed soundsculpture. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with some of the artists about their work.
Synthesis III takes place on 15 January at 6.30pm at the Irish Film Institute. Tickets are available from www.ifi.ie, and early booking is recommended.
