The Machine of Song - George Higgs' Artist in the Community Scheme.

George Higgs has an unusual approach to the performance of his musical compositions, often creating his own instruments and performance machinery using both analogue and digital equipment. Through the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community scheme, managed by Create, George has been composer in residence with students from St. Mary’s School for Deaf Girls in Dublin. Since late 2010, George has worked with the girls on a weekly basis to  develop the Sense Ensemble and to build a new instrument to allow the girls express themselves most effectively. Central to this project is the exploration of ways for the students to interact musically.

The Sense Ensemble will perform on their new instrument "The Machine of Song - a musical contruction of audible, visible and tactile proportions"  in the CMC library May 19th at 1pm.  The performance  will be preceded by a description of a year's works as composer in residence in the school.
