CMC presents Musical Tales, two concerts in Dublin city libraries
The series is in association with the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama and takes place at 1pm on 26 November and 4 December.
Funded by the Dublin City Council Arts Office and supported by the Dublin City Council Library Development Office, the series is curated by Dr. Mark Fitzgerald of DIT and celebrates the music of contemporary Irish composers in connection with four published books: In my own light - Raymond Deane; Different Voices: Irish Music and Music in Ireland - Benjamin Dwyer; The Life and Music of James Wilson - Dr. Mark Fitzgerald; Music and Identity in Ireland and beyond - Editors Dr. Mark Fitzgerald/John O'Flynn.
Mark Fitzgerald on the series:
“After a long period in which there was little or no published work available about Irish contemporary composition, there have been several publications in the last few years focusing on the topic. These concerts highlight the most recent publications focusing on two different strands - books in which the composer's voice is heard directly and books in which third parties give the reader a more detached critical view of the work of Irish composers. These concerts act as a soundtrack to the four featured volumes bringing us from the 1930s right up to the present with a piece premiered earlier this year. From the seven selected compositions the audience should get a sense of the huge diversity of voices Irish composition has produced over the last 80 years.”
Each concert will present an hour of music performed by David O’Doherty (violin), Varazdat Khachatryan (piano), Pablo Manjón-Cabezas Guzman (clarinet), Aoife Gibney (soprano) and Elspeth Hayes (soprano) interspersed with introductions by Mark Fitzgerald. Admission is free.
CMC will also be hosting an exhibition centred around the Musical Tales concert series at the Centre’s Library from 16 November - 4 December 2015 as part of the Library Association of Ireland's Library Ireland Week. The exhibition will be open from 10am-5.30pm Monday to Friday for the three weeks. Scores and recordings of the musical works that are featured in the books will be on display, and visitors will be encouraged to explore the collection further. All four featured books are available to purchase directly from the CMC shop.
