Open Music Project

The Open Music Project 2012 is a project run by the Association of Irish Composers (AIC) and funded by the Arts Council’s Project Award. The project, which has been running since January 2012, is a mentoring scheme aimed at composers who want practical experience in having their scores realised.

Nine Irish composers have been chosen to participate in the project, and each composer has been tasked to write a work based on the concept of openness. The project brief describes the concept in more detail:

…the music is open simultaneously in different ways. Interpretation is open to some extent, instrumentation of scores is left open, and the pieces are open to amateur players. All this requires openness from the composers also. The project also addresses itself to solutions for making contemporary music in the context of a recession.

The project is led by composers John McLachlan, Peter Moran and Gráinne Mulvey. The composers who are taking part are David Collier, Emma O’Halloran, Jenn Kirby, Sinead Finegan, Galen Mac Caba, Donal MacErlaine, Sean Doherty, Raeghnya Zutshi, and Fiona Linnane. The performers are Susan Doyle (flute), Paul Roe (clarinet), Ryan Molloy (piano), Cora Venus Lunny (violin), and Annette Cleary (cello).

The project finishes in May with a workshop performance and recording for each of the pieces.
