The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s Horizons 2012 Contemporary Music Series, taking place over four Tuesday lunchtimes in January and free to the public, showcases the work of emerging (‘Green Shoot’) and established composers as well as works by other figures who have influenced some of the featured composers. Karen Power (left) and Garrett Sholdice (below) feature as ‘Green Shoot’ composers; Ronan Guilfoyle and Kevin Volans feature as established figures. Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, another voice from the younger generation of Irish composers, will also feature as will Michael Alcorn, Morton Feldman, James Tenney and Giacinto Scelsi.

Each of the featured composers can also be heard in conversation before his/her concert in Composers in Conversation with Contemporary Music Centre Director, Evonne Ferguson.

Composers in Conversation takes place in association with the Contemporary Music Centre. Composers in Conversation offers the audience the chance to engage with the composers featured and aims to enhance the concert experience.

The series will include four world premières – two by Karen Power, one each by Garrett Sholdice and Benedict Schlepper-Connolly; the preview of Ronan Guilfoyle’s first concerto for electric guitar and orchestra - commissioned by RTÉ - ahead of its world première by the RTÉ NSO on Friday 20 January, the Irish première of Scelsi’s Quattro Pezzi per Orchestra as well as three separate arrangements by Sholdice of the Bach chorale Ach wie nichtig, ach wie flüchtig for string orchestra, brass ensemble and full orchestra.

All concerts in the series are free of charge. The series commences on Tuesday 10 January at the National Concert Hall. Advance booking is advised. See www.rte.ie/nationalsymphonyorchestra
