A new chamber opera by Ian Wilson tours during November and December
The Last Siren is a collaboration between Ian Wilson, director Ksenija Krnajski, vocalist Lauren Kinsella and sound art collective The Quiet Club.
The experimental opera takes its inspiration from the Greek story of the Sirens, and centres on a hermit-like woman who believes she is the last of the Sirens.
In a libretto written by Wilson, Irish singer Laura Kinsella takes the role of the SIren, while the The Quiet Club (Danny McCarthy and Mick O'Shea) provide the sonic context for Kinsella's voice and represent the characters of Orpheus and Odysseus, two mythical figures the Siren attempts to seduce from time to time to try and procure from them at least an acknowledgement of her presence.
Acclaimed Serbian theatre director Ksenija Krnajski directs the opera, whose performances are funded through Beyond Borders from the PRS for Music Foundation, Creative Scotland, Arts Council of Ireland, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Arts Council of Wales.
The performances take place at the Guesthouse, Cork on 5 November; 6 November at the Cresent Arts Centre, Belfast as part of the 'Tempered' contemporary music weekend; 7 November in Arberdeen; and 6 December at the Model, Sligo.
