Waterford New Music Week: 16-20 April

This month sees the return of the Waterford Institute of Technology's New Music Week, a celebration of and platform for new music of many styles that is now in its fourteenth year. Taking place from Monday 16th to Friday 20th of April – with a second helping on the 27th – the festival showcases both emerging student talent and the work of established composers and musicians in the south and south-east in a series of concerts and workshops.

Highlights of the New Music Week include vocal and listening workshops with Linda Buckley on Monday 16th in Christ Church Cathedral,  as well as a lunchtime concert of guitar music on the same day, featuring Brendan Maher performing his own compositions. Tuesday 17th sees a morning talk that will include papers on works by James Wilson and Eric Sweeney, while in the afternoon Baroque string musicians Barry Guy and Maya Homburger will give an improvisation workshop and concert. Wednesday 18th focuses on upcoming composers and musicians in student performances, and the rest of the week is dedicated to performances of the music of Irish composers, such as a concert of flute and electronics by Joe O'Farrell featuring works by Gráinne Mulvey and Derek Anthony Kelly. Also on Thursday 19th will be a performance from the National Chamber Choir of Ireland as part of their national tour, performing works by Irish composers. This will be preceded by 'New Music – New Voices', a discussion about new choral music in Ireland, hosted in association with the Contemporary Music Centre and facilitated by its director Evonne Ferguson with the NCCI Artistic Director Paul Hillier.
