NewSoundWorlds April features RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet with premiere by Siobhan Cleary

Since its conception in 2005, the New Sound Worlds concert series, presented by Ireland Promoting New Music, has been a platform for Irish contemporary music, helping to bring it to a wider audience. In association with the Contemporary Music Centre, April's NewSoundWorlds concert will feature an all-Irish programme of contemporary music performed by the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet at the Kevin Barry Room at the National Concert Hall, 8.30pm, April 25th.

With works by Aloys Fleischmann, Raymond Deane and David Flynn, the concert is a true exploration of the many faces and times of Irish music, from Fleischmann's Movements for String Quartet (1927-1932) to a work commissioned especially for the event: NewSoundWorlds curator Siobhán Cleary's Scenes from a Dongba Script, part of a larger work in progress, a ballet based on the folktales of Southern China and incorporating folk songs from the Yunnan province.

Cleary's work is not the only Vanbrugh Quartet commission on the programme with Deirdre Gribbin's Merrow Sang, written in 2007 for the ensemble's 21st birthday celebrations, and Ian Wilson's 1992 Winter Edge also featuring. Dave Flynn's award-winning The Cranning completes the programme's exploration of Irish music with it's elements of traditional Irish music. The whole promises a concert that spans the new and the old within Irish music, a refreshing balance of traditional, early contemporary and the as-yet-unheard.
