A new work by John McLachlan will be premiered in New York on 16 October
The work, Youtunes, forms part of a concert of premieres at the Italian Academy at Columbia University, New York by the League of Composers / ISCM.
Composed for NYC-based electric guitar quartet Bodies Electric, who will premiere the work, the title of the the piece is a play on two well-known web sites. The composer describes the piece:
“The piece is called Youtunes as a play on two well-known web sites where people might get music, and also because the score allows the players themselves to make up a lot of the detail of exactly what they play and when. I used YouTube a fair bit in preparing the piece because I needed to consult online tutorials on electric guitar effects to refresh my knowledge of the possibilities of guitar with pedals.”
The work will be performed alongside works by Italian composer Giacomo Manzoni, and two of his pupils Daniele Venturi and Peyman Farzinpour, as well as Dina Koston, Martin Boykan, Robert Martin, Georg Friedrich Haas, and Fred Lerdahl.
The concert takes place at 7pm on 16 October 2013 at the Teatro of the Italian Academy, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue, NYC. Admission is free and further details are available from the Italian Academy at Columbia University web site.
