CMC at West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2013
The Young Composers' Forum at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival 2013 took place on 29 June at St. Brendan's Hall, Bantry, and was a unique professional development opportunity for the composers involved. Composers Solfa Carlile, Timothy Cape, Patrick Egan and Seán Doherty workshopped their winning works from the West Cork Chamber Music Festival/Cork County Council Young Composer Bursary Scheme 2013, a partnership between the Arts Council, Cork County Council, and CMC, and CIT Cork School of Music. The works were performed by the Chiral, Cepheus, Cairde and Bernadel Quartets. Composer Ian Wilson directed the workshop and led some very informative dialogues between the composers and the performers. The works receive their official premieres during the festival.
The premiere of John Kinsella's String Quartet No. 5 took place at the Opening Concert of the festival performed by the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, and it was a very fitting end to a varied programme involving George Enescu, György Ligeti, Anton Webern, Franz Schubert and Erkki-Sven Tüür.
CMC's Art of Sound multimedia exhibition is at Bantry Library for the duration of the festival (28 June to 6 July) and also for the West Cork Literary Festival, until 16 July. Admission is free and further information is available from the library, 027–50460.
