CMC's Salon series returns on 29 February 2012

The performance, the first in CMC’s 2012 new music::new Ireland series, takes place from 6.00-7.00pm on Wednesday, 29 February 2012 at the Kevin Barry Room of the National Concert Hall and features composer and guitarist Dave Flynn and violinist Aoife Ní Bhriain. The duo will perform music by Alyson Barber, Jerome de Bromhead, Dave Flynn, and Eric Sweeney.

Alyson Barber’s Drone was originally written for two violins and has been rewritten especially for the featured combination of violin and guitar. A new violin and guitar version of Eric Sweeney’s 1998 violin and cello work, Comhra also features, as does Jerome de Bromhead’s recent work Augury and Dave Flynn’s work dedicated to Barack Obama, Toccata for Obama.

Though primarily known as a composer, Dave Flynn is one of Ireland’s leading guitarists, and has developed a unique style, which draws on his experience in many different music genres from classical to folk to jazz and popular music. A keen chamber musician, he has performed with such groups as the Crash Ensemble, the Neurtingen Guitar Orchestra and the Dublin Guitar Quartet, a group he co-founded. He has premiered works by composers including Michael Gordon, Roland Dyens, Kevin Volans and Philip Glass.

Born into a family rich in traditional music, Aoife Ní Bhriain has participated in masterclasses with many distinguished professors in Ireland, America, France, Germany and Romania. She has performed as one of the soloists in Bill Whelan’s concerto for two violins Inishlacken with the Royal Irish Academy of Music Chamber Orchestra in 2008, and the Ulster Orchestra in 2009. In 2011, she premiered Dave Flynn’s The Longest Reel at West Cork Music’s 2011 Masters of Tradition series. Aoife Ní Bhriain is also a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra since 2010.

The CMC new music::new Ireland salon series aims to encourage newcomers and enthusiasts alike to engage with the music of Irish composers. Each performance takes place in an informal atmosphere with dialogue encouraged between composers, performers and audience. This is the Centre’s ninth series and salons will take place across the year on the last Wednesday of each month, apart from the summer months (June, July and August).
