Paul Flynn wins US choral Composition Competition
Irish composer Paul Flynn was awarded first prize in the recent Corpus Christi Chorale choral competition for his work Sub Tuum Praesidium.
A setting of a second century Marian text, the work will be premiered by the Corpus Christi Chorale on 15 October 2013 at the Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi.
As a result of the competition, the composer’s 2009 Ave Maria will also be performed. Initially written for Loreto College, Cavan, the work will be performed in an SSATTB version by Camerata Isla from Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi.
Originally from Lucan, Co. Dublin and now based in Cavan, Paul Flynn is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin, where he specialised in composition with Kevin O’Connell and Donnacha Dennehy. He has an extensive background in choral conducting and singing, and has written many choral works which have been performed both in Ireland and abroad. His recent work, Hymnus Sancti Camelaci, was selected for the 2014 ISCM World Music Days Festival, which takes place in Poland.
