Dublin Sound Lab present two concerts as part of the 2014 Dublin Fringe Festival

The concerts, which contextualise music performance in the urban environment at Tiger Dublin Fringe 2014, take place on 17 and 18 September at the Temple Bar Gallery and Studios.

In both concerts, five wind players lead the audience on an interactive navigation through Dublin’s soundscape. The first concert features 3 Places Dublin, a new multi-venue work by Austrian composer Peter Ablinger for three unique Dublin spaces visited by audience and musicians walking together through the city. The work itself is based on how white noise behaves in each of these locations, developing a microtonal score, a ‘kind of self-portrait for each of the three spaces’.

The second concert includes a collaborative work by four Irish composers inspired by Ablinger’s work. Responses features the work of PPiaras Hoban, Gráinne Mulvey, Fergal Dowling and Rob Canning performed by five wind players, with interactive electronics, mobile performers and a mobile audience distributed throughout the four levels of the Temple Bar Gallery & Studios Atrium. For Piaras Hoban’s piece, attendees will be asked to download the work to play on their own phone or portable device before entering the performance space, while Rob Canning’s work utilises mobile transmitters that allow the performers to leave the building and transmit both their performance and Dublin’s urban soundscape back to the gallery space.

Over four decades Peter Ablinger has explored new aesthetic and technical fields, examining the nature of sound, noise, timbre, performance context, non-narrative forms, site-specific performances, installations, text-based works, instrumental and electronic collaborations (including his famous ‘speaking piano’ pieces). He will visit Dublin for the first time and will be in attendance at both concerts and present a masterclass in association with the CMC with six composers/sound artists on 18 September.

The concerts are support by Dublin City Council, Austrian Embassy Dublin, Contemporary Music Centre, Irish Architecture Foundation and Tiger Dublin Fringe.
