Crash Ensemble premiere a new commission by Daniel Figgis at Galway Arts Festival.
The Crash Ensemble will form part of the line-up at this year’s Galway Arts Festival, the country’s largest annual international arts festival. The group will perform a programme of new works at St. Nicholas Church in the middle of the festival’s first week, on 19 July 2012.
The programme for the evening is a mix of works that Crash has performed over the past year and the premiere of a new commissioned work by composer and producer Daniel Figgis. Figgis’ dimmerswitch uses the full ensemble of 23 players with tape. According to the composer, the piece ‘presents a self-regulating but faulty steampunk mechanism in a fervid and hyperactive dialogue with the beating heart that is Crash Ensemble.’ Also on the night is American composer Nico Muhly’s Drones, Variations, Ornaments, another Crash commission that was premiered at their Young Americans concert last year. The concert also features Donnacha Dennehy’s award-winning 2009 work with sean-nós performer Iarla O’Lionaird, Grá agus Bás.
The news of Crash’s performance at the Galway Arts Festival comes close on the back of the news that the ensemble will be this year’s Ensemble-in-Residence at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in November, where they will perform a programme of works by artistic director Donnacha Dennehy, as well as a number of British premieres of works by American composers, once again including Nico Muhly.
