Ruaille Buaille New Music Commission 2025: “Sonic Tapestry - Sounds of Lucan House" by Abigail Smith

7 June 2025 12:30

Lucan House and Gardens

A unique music and sound journey that invites listeners to explore the natural beauty of Lucan House through sound and music. This new work by CMC BRIGID Residency Composer Abigail Smith is commissioned by the Ruaille Buaille 2025 Lucan Children’s Music Festival.

Composer / musician Abigail Smith has worked with children from local schools in Lucan to create sounds from found objects, voices and field recordings. Excerpts of these workshop recordings will be included in the new music commission.

In the workshops, Abigail recorded the sounds and demonstrated how sound can be manipulated using effects and used as starting points for composing new music, exploring:

  • How to tell a story through music and sound.
  • How sound and music enhances a story.
  • What sounds and music can help to tell that story?
  • How to create an original rich sound world using objects in our environment to ignite the imagination of the listener
  • What is the role of silence in music and our sound world?

Sonic Tapestry: Sounds of Lucan House will be part of the Ruaille Buaille Children’s Music Festival in Lucan House on June 7th 2025. Abigail will also be at the Ruaille Buaille Music Village directing all ages in listening sessions of the new composition.
