A short lecture recital of improvised experimental music by Dr. Seán Clancy and Quatuor Bozzini on Monday 2 December 2024 at 6pm in the Trapdoor located on the LG floor of the Newman Building.
Quatuor Bozzini are joining us from Montréal, Canada courtesy of a Craig Dobbin Legacy Scholarship, and are in residence in UCD from 28 November – 3 December 2024, where they will be working with me on a project entitled Sharing a Practice Research Methodology Through Collaborative Creative Praxis. This lecture recital will see me and the quartet sharing some of our strategies for collaboration (which are rooted in the practice of visual artist Sol LeWitt) and we will conclude with a performance that implements these strategies in an improvisation for string quartet and electronics.

The Craig Dobbin Legacy Scholarships are an initiative of the UCD Centre for Canadian Studies, UCD’s College of Arts and Humanities, and the Ireland Canada University Foundation (ICUF).
Quatuor Bozzini have been an original voice and strong advocate in new, experimental, and classical music since 1999. Driving the hyper-creative Montréal scene and beyond, the quartet cultivates an ethos of risk-taking, experimentation, and collaboration, venturing boldly off the beaten track. With a rigorous eye for quality, they have nurtured a rich and diverse repertoire, regardless of trends. This has led to over 400 commissioned pieces, and some 500 premiered works from a galaxy of acclaimed composers such as Jürg Frey (CH), Cassandra Miller (CAN), Michael Oesterle (CAN), Linda Catlin Smith (CAN), Christian Wolff (US), Gerald Barry (IRE), and Jennifer Walshe (IRE). Their open, collaborative, artist-led approach has resulted in the realisation of numerous innovative and highly-praised productions, including inter-disciplinary projects with video, theatre and dance.
Seán Clancy’s work has been described as ‘Equal part sacred & seductive’ (Tempo); ’An affecting reminder of minimalism’s capacity to feel deeply personal and purposeful’ (The Quietus); and ‘Beautifully simple yet elusive’ (The New York Times). His work deals with translation, examining minimal compositional strategies over extended periods of time, and devised collaboration. His music has performed across the world from New Mexico in the USA to Beijing in China. He has written music for basketball players, chamber groups, his duo with Andy Ingamells, hurlers, football players, large ensembles, singers, soloists, and symphony orchestras. His work has been performed on or in art galleries, beaches, churches, concert halls, libraries, pubs, railway bridges, sports stadiums, squats, supermarket freezers, town halls, and universities. These performances try to draw attention to things both big and small from our lived experiences. Seán is Ad Astra Fellow in Composition at the UCD School of Music.
