musikprotokoll festival: Klangforum Wien featuring a new work by Karen Power
Helmut List Halle

Klangforum Wien
Ellen Ugelvik, solo piano.
The acoustic landscape of a spruce forest and the subterranean communication network of trees inspired Norwegian composer Kristine Tjøgersen to write her piano concerto, in which the interior of the instrument itself is transformed into a forest landscape. Composers Madli Marje Gildemann and Karen Power also use biological processes as a source of inspiration and have each written new works for this concert.
Canada-based composer, artist, curator, and author Sandeep Bhagwati has shaped current postcolonial discourses with his essays. For Klangforum, he has conceived a work that places musicians in a nonhierarchical spatial arrangement. They do not follow a score but instructions received via headphones—a work weaves a fine-mesh textured entanglement of composition and improvisation.
The compositions by Karen Power and Madli Marje Gildemann were commissioned by ORF musikprotokoll with the support of VGR–Verwertungsgesellschaft Rundfunk. The composition by Sandeep Bhagwati was commissioned by ORF musikprotokoll with the support of Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ).
The performance of Karen Power composition is supported by Culture Ireland.
