World premiere of "Cund" composed by Áine Mallon as part of the ICON Arts Residency (Live Stream on Facebook)
State Philharmonic Sibiu - Sala Thalia din Sibiu

Áine Mallon's "Cund" receives its world premiere on Saturday 22 October at the Filarmonica de Stat Sibiu, Romania at 5pm (UTC+1). The work was composed as part of a residency programme with ICON Arts, in partnership with the Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland. The piece is for solo accordion and percussion ensemble and is inspired by St Nicholas' Church in Cund, Translyvania.
Programme note: The story begins with the six composers from Romania, Europe and the USA who traveled in search of new sources of inspiration. They visited the heritage villages and learned from the locals legends inherited from their ancestors, and then shared the experience in the ICON Arts creative laboratory. They encountered in each fortified church emotions prepared to exist for eternity, imprinted in paintings, decorations, mysterious staircases, in fairy-tale windows, bells, symbols and medieval coats of arms. Together they triggered a certain state of inevitable contemplation, conducive to the act of creation in its most authentic manifestations. The composers thus took over hte living memory of a central detail which they metamorphosed into shapes and hieghts dedicated to a solo instrument. Six new pieces and as many universes, apparently limited in time, infinite in intention, resulted. On Saturday 22 October, 11 artists will perform under the inspiration of towns of Biertan, Copșa Mare, Cund, Valea Viilor, Cloașterf and Mălâncrav.
Each of the 6 pieces will constitute a part of a modular collective work, "Suita Transilvanica". Following the premiere, recordings of theses works will be available listen to in each of the fortified churches, as part of this project.
"Residence Transilvanica" is a project organized by the UCIMR Association - the Interpretive Creation Union of Romanian Musicians, a cultural project co-financed by AFCN - the National Cultural Fund Administration.
