'The Smithfield Sessions' featuring new music curated by CMC Emerging Composers Aoife Kavanagh and Paul Scully, and a workshop for children led by Áine Mallon

Dublin City Council presents The Smithfield Sessions, curated by First Music Contact, in partnership with The Contemporary Music Centre, Improvised Music Company and Music NetworkThe Smithfield Sessions invites people of all ages to discover emerging musicians from the contemporary, popular, jazz and classical music genres on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November from 12 noon to 6pm. The event will showcase eight emerging acts and give people an opportunity to attend free masterclasses in drumming, composition, group music-making and an introduction to improvisation workshop. Each day begins with workshops and masterclasses from 12 noon - 2.30pm with performances from 2.30pm to 6pm.

CMC is delighted to collaborate on this programme which features two showcase performances curated by CMC Emerging Composers 2022 Aoife Kavanagh and Paul Scully, and a "Create and Compose" Children's workshop delivered by CMC Composer Áine Mallon.

Saturday 12 November

Workshops and Masterclasses

Presented by The Contemporary Music Centre 

  • "Create and Compose" Children's Workshop led by CMC composer Áine Mallon

Learn how sound is made, make your own instrument and compose a new piece of music together! In this fun and interactive group composing session, children will create their own instruments from everyday materials - such as egg cartons, beads, rice, tins, elastic bands, boxes etc. and perform a piece of music composed together, facilitated by award winning composer Áine Mallon. All materials provided.

  • A drumming workshop with Micháel Quinn (Dermot Kennedy’s drummer)

Showcase Performances

 

  • "Sound Out" #1 New music with CMC Emerging Composer 2022 Paul Scully.

The world premiere of a new electroacoustic work by Paul Scully. 'A Full and Frank Exchange' is an electroacoustic piece that combines a variety of the composers' interests such as speech and language, soundscape ecology, humour, absurdity, postdigitality, microtonality, and bongos. Featuring Yseult Cooper-Stockdale (cello).

  • "Sound Out" #2 New music with CMC Emerging Composer 2022 Aoife Kavanagh

Aoife Kavanagh's curated "Sound Out" showcase features Ailbhe Kehoe (piano) and Kevin Neville (bass-baritone) who will perform a programme of contemporary classical duets and solos, including works by Fiona Linnane, Philip Hammond, American composer Harrison Leslie Adams, and the world premiere of 'Ordóg Fhinn', a new piece for voice, piano and electronics by Aoife Kavanagh.

Presented in collaboration with Music Network:

  • Woven Kin featuring Aisling Urwin on harp & vocals and Siobhán Moore on guitar, vocals & bodhrán.
  • A traditional ensemble led by TG4 Young Musician of the Year 2022, Diarmuid Ó Meachair, accordion player and sean nós singer. He will be joined by fiddle player James Carthy and Paddy McEvoy on piano.
