The world premiere Opera 'This Hostel Life' by Evangelia Rigaki

26 September 2019 20:00 - 28 September 2019 20:00

Christ Church Cathedral

This Hostel Life

Evangelia found her inspiration in the writings of Irish-resident, Nigerian writer Melatu Uche Okorie, in stories Melatu wrote while in direct provision.

The world premiere on Thursday 26 and Saturday 28 September will be given in the historic and atmospheric underground setting of the crypt of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.

Evangelia is the composer member of INO Studio, and the production, directed by Caitriona McLaughlin, and designed by Sarah-Jane Shiels, will also feature the award-winning choir New Dublin Voices, conductor Bernie Sherlock, and INO Studio’s four singers, Amy Ní Fhearraigh (soprano), Rachel Croash (soprano), Andrew Gavin (tenor), and Robert McAllister (bass). The opera’s various scenes will each pair a singer with an instrumentalist from the new, Dublin-based ensemble Parabasis

The scenes will repeat and play continuously, allowing audience members to come and go during the two-hour performance window. Everyone can experience the opera at their own pace and in their own unique way. By moving through and around the stories playing simultaneously, listeners will make their own sense of a troubling world that is alien and hidden to most of us.
