The Piper and The Earl

A special afternoon event of talks and music in the National Library commemorating the lives of two great Irish cultural and historical figures, Seamus Ennis and Hugh O'Neill.

This year marks the centenary of the birth of Seamus Ennis, the celebrated uilleann piper, singer, collector and storyteller. Also a backward look into the turbulent history of Ireland in the late 16th Century and an examination of the life of the Great O'Neill through music, drama and story.
 

Programme:

  • 12 noon - 12.30pm Professor Ciaran Brady TCD. 'The Life and Times of Hugh O'Neill', Earl of Tyrone.
  • 12.35pm - 1.05pm Peter Browne, piper and former RTE producer.'The Life and Music of Seamus Ennis'.
  • 3.00 - 3.15pm  An introductory talk about Michael Holohan's new double CD, 'The Road to Lough Swilly'; by Dr. Fintan Vallely, flautist, lecturer and author of the Companion to Irish Traditional Music (Cork University Press, 2011).
  • 3.20pm - 4.30pm A Recital featuring Mick O’Brien, renowned uilleann piper and teacher, Donal O’Kelly, actor and playwright, The Boyne Valley Chamber Orchestra and Michael Holohan, composer, producer and musical director.
Copies of the CD will be available for purchase.
 
All welcome. Admission to all events is free.
