Composer Lab 2018: Premiere performance of works

RTÉ NSO AND CMC PRESENT WORLD PREMIERES OF COMPOSERS’ WORKS IN CELEBRATION OF COMPOSER LAB 2018

The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and Contemporary Music Centre are delighted to present world premieres of Wah-man by Maria Minguella and Three’s Company by Anne-Marie O’Farrell, to mark the culmination of COMPOSER LAB 2018. The concert previously scheduled for the National Concert Hall will now be presented by RTÉ lyric fm in Studio 1, RTÉ Radio Centre on Tuesday, 1 May at 7.30pm. The performances by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Gavin Maloney, and will be recorded for subsequent broadcast on RTÉ lyric fm in celebration of RTÉ lyric fm’s birthday and the continuing celebrations throughout 2018 of 70 years of the RTÉ NSO.

In addition to featuring these new works by COMPOSER LAB participant composers Maria Minguella and Anne-Marie O’Farrell, this special event will include interviews with the two composers and contributions and insights into the workings of COMPOSER LAB from mentor composer David Fennessy and conductor Gavin Maloney. Presented by Ellen Cranitch, the audience will have the chance to learn about the compositional process behind these new works, and to hear insights from both of the composers into their creative journeys in taking these works from blank page to stage under the mentorship of composer David Fennessy.

Now in its third year, COMPOSER LAB provides a creative, open environment to composers to deepen their understanding of writing for the full forces of a symphony orchestra. Using their works-in-progress as a starting point, composers participate in one-to-one mentoring sessions with the mentor composer, and with section leaders of the orchestra. This is followed by a public workshop with the full orchestra, mentor composer and conductor, during which they receive feedback before revising and finally submitting their works for public performance.
