On Sunday 8 October, new music ensemble Concorde return to the Hugh Lane Gallery to present a programme of music from Hong Kong and Ireland. Later in the month, Concorde will travel to Hong Kong, at the invitation of Avant Music Group and with the support of Culture Ireland, where they will present a programme of ‘New Music from Ireland’ at the San Wan Ho Civic Centre Theatre.
Concorde is Ireland’s first new music ensemble and celebrates 40 years of working with composers and listeners around the world. Last Autumn a series of concerts at the Hugh Lane Gallery featured guest artists, premieres and commissions along with revivals of selected works from Concorde’s vast repertoire. Over the past forty years, Concorde has presented new music at over 350 public concerts, including nearly fifty concerts abroad. The group has given world premieres of some 250 compositions and more than 100 Irish composers have been represented in Concorde’s performances.
Dublin audiences will have a chance to hear the world premiere of two new works by Hong Kong composers. The programme of delicate and evocative music written in the past five years includes:
• Yip Kim Fung’s response to a 19th century poem describing a view of the Western Mountains in Beijing and merging ancient Chinese modes with modern techniques and harmonies
• Alex Au’s interpretation of the writings of ancient Chinese philosopher Mozi, creating musical images from the effect of coloured pigment on white silk
• Chin Ting Chan’s abstract trio in which the interaction of three instruments merges into one sound
and two recent Concorde commissions which reflect very different landscapes:
• Linda Buckley depicts the snowy silences of Alaska
• Judith Ring enjoys the energy of a sunrise seen from the Wexford coast
Programme includes:
Chin Ting Chan …and see it vanish (clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, and cello)
Alex Au Tin Yung Dyeing / suŏ răn (clarinet, violin, and cello) (premiere)
Linda Buckley …downward in a freezing earth (bass clarinet, violin, cello and tape) commissioned by Concorde
Yip Kim Fung Silent Landscape / mò jìng (clarinet/bass clarinet, violin, and cello) (premiere)
Judith Ring Swelt Belly at Dawn (clarinet, violin, and cello) commissioned by Concorde
