Culture Night at the Contemporary Music Centre

For Immediate Release

2 September 2015

The Contemporary Music Centre celebrates Culture Night 2015 on 18 September with an evening of exciting new music and conversation. The Centre is open from 6.30pm until 10pm, entrance is on a first-come-first-served basis and as always, admission is free.

The Centre's highly successful salon series will feature across the night, interspersed with electronic sets in the Centre's outdoor courtyard and culminating in a unique opportunity for Dublin audiences to experience crOw, a unique improvising duo. Throughout the night conversation will be encouraged between composers, performers and audience in a relaxed atmosphere.

The night opens with a salon event featuring Gavin Brennan (saxophone) and Aileen Cahill (electric keyboard) with works by Greg Caffrey, Ciaran Farrell, Eric Sweeney, Philip Martin, John Gibson and Deirdre McKay. Gavin and Aileen perform as the Brennan - Cahill duo and have their own approachable style of giving insight into the works they perform and contemporary music in general.

Gavin Prior will follow directly on with a live performance of 花火子 (Fireworks Child) outdoor in the Centre's courtyard. Fireworks Child is named after Koko, the first gorilla to participate in research on the linguistic capabilities of her species. It is a result of Prior's on-going work with live electronics incorporating multiple feedback loops. Gavin Prior is best known as a member of United Bible Studies. He currently plays in the noise duo Toymonger and Free Jazz/Metal Trio Tarracoir.

The second salon of the night features composer Anna Murray and soprano Michelle O'Rourke. Together they will perfom LIT, a new work which they will develop in CMC across the week leading up to Culture Night as well as Aimai. Aimai features in the compilation album just released by UK based label Demerara. Their set also includes live electronics from Anna Murray and a number of works curated by Michelle.

Dublin based composer and musician Enda Bates will perform two works for live electronics and tabletop electric guitar. This unusual instrument is fitted with a third bridge giving two distinct sets of notes which can be played with both hands, much like a zither. The first work, Guitar Map Dowser, is a live improvisation previously recorded and filmed in March, 2015, but yet to be performed live. The second piece will be a new work, composed specifically for Culture Night 2015.

A surprise element to the night will be a performance by composer Sean Clancy. Sean will work in CMC across the week leading up to Culture Night and will develop a multi-media piece for electronics and visual media. A new departure for Sean who has built up a considerable body of work based on notated scores, this residency and performance will allow Sean explore new working methods in his artistic practice.

To conclude a widely eclectic night of new music performances, crOw, will make its Dublin debut performance. crOw features Cathal Roche on saxophones and Ian Wilson on live electronics and sound objects in a performance that takes over the ground floor of CMC. crOw's music crosses borders and boundaries but is at its heart expressive, colourful and textural. A great way to end a great night of music at the Contemporary Music Centre.
