‘Pop Up’ Opera for Culture Night 2017 - Call for Expressions of Interest for three CMC Composer/Performers

Deadline: Fri 18 Aug 2017 - 17:00

The Contemporary Music Centre invites expressions of interest from registered CMC composers who are also singers or performers on any musical instrument (including piano, orchestral instruments, live electronics, guitar, etc.) to compose collectively and perform in a short ‘pop up’ opera (15 minutes approx.) specially commissioned by CMC for Culture Night 2017 (Friday, 22 September 2017).

This ‘pop up’ opera will be produced in association with OTC Opera Hub, and will be premiered at CMC’s building at 19 Fishamble Street in Dublin.  The cast on the night will consist of a team of five (5), including the three (3) composer/performers and two (2) contemporary opera singers or instrumentalists.  Additional performances of the opera will also be held on Culture Night at CMC, and in one or more nearby outdoor venues designated by Culture Night 2017.

On the basis of expressions of interest received, a panel will be formed to select three (3) CMC registered composer/performers to compose collectively the ‘pop up’ opera, which will be produced by OTC Opera Hub.  OTC Opera Hub is a network for emerging singers, directors, composers, librettists and répétiteurs in Ireland where artists may develop their artistic practice through engagement with collaborative projects and training opportunities.  This CMC opportunity is aimed at providing a continuing professional development opportunity for CMC registered composers with an interest in opera, and will celebrate composer/performers in particular.  The fee available to composer/performers will be €400 each, reflecting the developmental nature of this opportunity.

The theme of this ‘pop up’ opera will relate to CMC’s historic building, and people or events associated with Fishamble Street and its environs.  It is expected that there will be a number of collaborative sessions in September to devise the opera, which will be led musically by one of the composer/performers.  Rehearsals in the lead-up to Culture Night 2017 will bring this ‘pop up’ opera from blank page to premiere.
