Music Current 2019 ‘call for participation’

Deadline: 14 December 2018 17:00

Dublin Sound Lab invites composers of any age or nationality, with experience or interest in electronic composition and performance, to participate in Music Current Festival, 10–13 April 2019. The participation programme is especially suitable for post-graduate or early career composers. Composers are invited to submit new or existing works for any combination of horn, cello or synthesizer with fixed-media, computer or live electronics for consideration for inclusion in Music Current festival. Submissions that include all of these instruments and an electronic or computer part will be favoured. As many as eight composers will be selected and invited to attend all festival public concerts at Smock Alley Theatre (www.smockalley.com), as well as workshops, round-table discussions, masterclasses and open rehearsals at the Contemporary Music Centre (www.cmc.ie) with the renowned American composer Steven Kazuo Takasugi (www.steventakasugi.com). All participant composers will have their selected works rehearsed and recorded by RETRO DISCO (retrodisco.org). Some of these participant composers’ works may also be selected for inclusion in the closing festival concert, 13 April 2019. One of the participating composers will be offered a commission of €2,500 to develop a new work in collaboration with Dublin Sound Lab (www.dublinsoundlab.ie) to be premiered at Music Current 2020. For Music Current 2019 we have now instituted the option of ‘auditor composer’. Auditor composers can attend all presentations, discussions, rehearsals, workshops and concerts, but will not present their work in forums, and will not have a work rehearsed, recorded or performed, and will not be considered for the Music Current Commission. Participants must pay registration fees in full by 1 February 2019. Music Current festival does not offer any scholarships, travel bursaries, accommodation, or assistance with travel arrangements. Participants whose works are selected are expected to perform the relevant electronic part of their own work in rehearsals and, if necessary, in concert.
