Berwick New Music International Composition Competition

Theme: Music for solo violin, viola, or cello 

Performers and judges: Darragh Morgan (violin), Fiona Winning (viola), Anton Lukoszevieze (cello)

You are invited to submit an original work to the Berwick Music Series International Composition Competition. The composition should be for solo instrument: violin, viola, or cello. Each of the two winning works will be performed by one of Darragh Morgan, Fiona Winning or Anton Lukoszevieze at a Berwick Music Series concert in late 2022.

Competition Aims

The 2021 Berwick Music Series International Composition Competition provides support, inspiration and exposure for composers of new music.

Eligibility

This competition is open to composers of all ages and nationalities. All musicians, including established or emerging artists, professionals or amateurs, are welcome to submit a piece. Submissions are welcome without regard to age, nationality, gender or their musical style.

Rules

Entry to the competition is free.
Each participant should submit a score in PDF format for a work for solo violin, viola, or cello. No electronics or other instruments may be included.
The composition must be no more than 6 minutes long.
The work should not have received a public live or on-line performance prior to submission, nor have been commercially published.
Participants should also submit a short written (no more than 200 words) programme note.
Each participant may make only one entry.

Additional notes for entrants

A work that requires additional preparation will be at the discretion of the performer.
A work that requires scordatura tuning should be notated where the player is expected to finger the notes (with actual pitches notated above in parentheses).

Judging

The submissions will be assessed by a panel comprising Anton Lukoszevieze, Darragh Morgan, and Fiona Winning, chaired by the BMS Director Michael Worboys. 

Prizes

Open Prize: £1000 plus performance of the work at a BMS concert.

Berwick Prize for a submission from a participant currently resident in the North-East of England: £500 plus performance of the work at a BMS concert.​

Further Conditions

Berwick Music Series has the option to award and/or withhold prizes; each decision is final.

Berwick Music Series reserves the right to make any changes to the rules, schedule or other information related to the competition without notification.

All entries, including those from the North-East, are judged for the Open Prize.
