The Future of Music in the Digital World 2 - The Contemporary Music Centre presents a one-day conference in the National Concert Hall, Thursday, 20 June 2013

9 May 2013

The Future of Music in the Digital World 2 brings together experienced national and international speakers to explore and discuss issues around music and digital culture. The conference is for artists and organisations engaged in any area of composition, performance, publishing or distribution across all forms of music, and anyone with an interest in music, the arts and technology.

How can the Internet and online technologies enhance and support music now and in the future? How can music best fit into the online cultural space, and what can organisations and musicians do to maximise their audience using emerging technologies and trends? These and many other questions will be examined across the day.

The keynote address is by Julie Feeney, singer/composer and will be followed by a series of panel discussions featuring a number of Irish and international guest speakers: Frank J. Oteri, New Music USA; Thomas Demidoff, New Music:New Audiences; Kostas Moschos, Institute for Research on Music & Acoustics (IEMA) - Greek Music Documentation Centre; Nick Sherrard, Sound and Music, UK; Breandán Knowlton, Europeana; Sandra Collins, Digital Repository Ireland; Malachy Moran, Manager, RTÉ Sound Library and Archive; Toner Quinn; Journal of Music.

The day concludes with a 2-hour workshop session, hosted by Steve Lawson and Andrew Dubber of New Music Strategies to introduce practical and useful ways to integrate the Internet into current work practice.

The Conference follows on from the first Future of Music in the Digital World conference presented by the Contemporary Music Centre in June 2010, as part of the annual conference of the International Association of Music Information Centres (IAMIC), hosted by CMC.

"Three years on from our first Future of Music in the Digital World conference, we're excited to take a fresh look at the role of the Internet in composers' and musicians' careers through a mixture of panel discussions and workshop. We're delighted to have such an esteemed line up of speakers and look forward to the discussions and debate generated by the day.", Jonathan Grimes, Contemporary Music Centre.

The conference is presented as part of The Arts Council programme, Culture Connects, marking Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and kindly supported by IMRO, the National Concert Hall, and the International Association of Music Information Centres. The Contemporary Music Centre is Ireland's national archive and resource centre for new music, supporting and developing the work of composers throughout the Republic and Northern Ireland. It is used on a national and international basis by performers, composers, promoters and members of the public interested in finding out more about music in Ireland.
