Up Close with Music - Concorde at the Gallery of Photography

15 June 2012

The premiere of a new work by Raymond Deane forms the centerpiece of a stimulating afternoon of music as the musicians of Concorde bring the fifth event in their Up Close with Music series to Dublin's Gallery of Photography on Sunday 1st July.

Deane's Mystery of a Street has been commissioned by the ensemble for this event, which continues Concorde's 35th anniversary celebrations. It also acknowledges Deane's longstanding connection with the group, for which he wrote the works ...Una Musica Riposa and Seachanges (with Danse Macabre).

The three short concerts in this unique performance space take place on the hour between 2pm and 5pm, each lasting for thirty minutes. Admission to all performances is free, but advance booking is recommended - contact concorde@eircom.net

The programme features an array of contemporary works, written for differing combinations of clarinet, violin, cello and accordion - among them, pieces by Frank Lyons, Deirdre McKay, James Wilson, Concorde's founder-director Jane O'Leary and young composer Marc Tweedie who is currently studying at Queen's University, Belfast. Works by Wolfgang Rihm, Erkki Jokinen and the Chicago-based Matthew Dotson bring an international flavour.

Concorde's Up Close with Music series was launched in October 2011 to celebrate the ensemble's 35th anniversary season. Its aims are to provide opportunities to create new work and to revisit previously commissioned work. It provides listeners with a chance to experience the music 'up close' and to talk with performers and composers between each concert. In keeping with the ensemble's commitment to new Irish music, each event features a new work by an Irish composer. The series is supported by a Music Project Award from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

In the run-up its premiere, Raymond Deane will talk about his new piece in an interview on the Contemporary Music Centre's website. Visit www.cmc.ie

Following the event on 1st July, Concorde returns to the Gallery of Photography on 22nd July with a programme that includes a new work by David Fennessy.
