The Contemporary Music Centre launches The Dublin Literary New Music Trail 2011

23 May 2011

The Contemporary Music Centre's new initiative for Summer 2011, The Dublin Literary New Music Trail 2011 launches a microsite today, 6pm, 23 May 2011, in the Contemporary Music Centre.

The microsite www.cmc.ie/musictrail is located on the Centre's own web site www.cmc.ie and contains all the information on The Dublin Literary New Music Trail 2011 which runs from 23 May - 31 August 2011.

The Dublin Literary Music New Trail 2011 consists of a main trail at the literary parade in St Patrick's Park as well as an extended trail across South Georgian Dublin. The Main Trail consists of five alcoves along the literary parade; Oscar Wilde, W.B.Yeats, James Joyce, Brendan Behan and Samuel Beckett. At these alcoves open air music can be triggered when one is in close proximity to the alcove.

The Extended Trail consists of six additional locations across South Georgian Dublin associated with Irish writers. On the extended trail music can be listened to with a smartphone by downloading the free layar application for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and Android devices. Smartphone users should visit www.cmc.ie/musictrail for the user guide information on how to download and use the free application needed to listen to each of the works at the trail locations. The extended trail employs the very latest in location-based, augmented reality technology for mobile phones.

The Dublin Literary New Music Trail 2011, is a celebration of the rich connections between Irish writers and Irish composers, in recognition of Dublin's UNESCO City of Literature status. Altogether works by ten Irish composers, associated with eleven Irish writers, are playing in seven outdoor locations in Dublin's city centre, across the Summer months. Each location has been carefully chosen due to its literary connection, and each piece of music accompanying each location carefully selected due to the relationship between that Irish composer and Irish writers.

"This is a mixed-reality new music trail around Dublin's city centre. Our primary purpose is to promote the work of contemporary Irish composers and make it relevant to audiences in an accessible and engaging way. The Dublin Literary Music New Trail 2011 provides an opportunity to hear new music, which relates to the literary status of Dublin, with the city as a backdrop" says Karen Hennessy, Project Manager, The Dublin Literary New Music Trail 2011.

The Contemporary Music Centre's Dublin Literary Music New Trail 2011 is free. It is part of the Dublin Writers' Festival which takes place, 23 - 29 May 2011, www.dublinwritersfestival.com. It is made possible through the funding support of Dublin City Council and the Summer in Dublin programme www.dublincity.ie as well as the ongoing funding support of the Contemporary Music Centre by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

A screening of 5 ReJoyce in Music films, commissioned by The Contemporary Music Centre in 2004, which celebrate the inspiration of James Joyce on 5 Irish composers: Vincent Kennedy, Michael Holohan, Trevor Knight, Rob Canning and Benjamin Dwyer, takes place at 730pm, on 23 May, as part of the launch of The Dublin Literary Music New Trail 2011.

The Contemporary Music Centre is Ireland's national archive and resource centre for new music, supporting and developing the work of composers throughout the Republic and Northern Ireland. It is used on a national and international basis by performers, composers, promoters and members of the public interested in finding out more about music in Ireland. The Contemporary Music Centre celebrates 25 years in 2011 and this is one of a number of initiatives to celebrate this.

For further information and to arrange interviews with any of the composers involved contact Karen Hennessy, Promotion Manager, Contemporary Music Centre, 19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8, tel: 01 673 1922, email: khennessy@cmc.ie www.cmc.ie
