The Contemporary Music Centre announces Irish composer Enda Bates as a New York ISSUE Project Room Emerging Artist

New York's ISSUE Project Room has awarded Irish Composer Enda Bates with an Emerging Artist Commission. The new work arising from this commission will be performed by Enda Bates, 8pm, 13 April 2011 in the Issue Project Room as part of Culture Ireland's Imagine Ireland, year-long season of Irish arts in America in 2011.

Enda Bates's new work for hexaphonic guitar, written specifically for ISSUE's 15-channel hanging speaker system, will transform the guitar not just sonically but also spatially. The localized guitar splits into individual strings, becoming a fragmented sonic cloud that will mimic the flight of birds as it moves around the audience.

Irish composer, musician, and producer Enda Bates is based in Dublin, Ireland, where he recently completed a Ph. D at Trinity College Dublin with Donnacha Dennehy. He is a founder of the Spatial Music Collective, and spatially distributed sound is a key factor in his work.

ISSUE Project Room's Emerging Artist Commissions/New Works program will commission eight emerging artists in 2011 to create a new work that will be presented at ISSUE Project Room's current 1500 sq. ft. performance space, between 1 January and 31 December 2011. The recipients of the commission all receive a 1,000 stipend, have access to the ISSUE Project Room's facilities, and have the opportunity to work with Stephan Moore on a unique multi-channel speaker system.

The Contemporary Music Centre is Ireland's national archive, resource centre and promotional body for new music, supporting the work of Irish composers from the Republic and Northern Ireland. Enda Bates is a composer registered with the Centre. The Centre is supported by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
