For Immediate ReleaseThe Contemporary Music Centre Launches Microsite as Part of Music in the Historic Quarter17 August 2010 The Contemporary Music Centre's new initiative Music in the Historic Quarter launches a microsite today. The microsite www.cmc.ie/musictrail is located on the Centre's own web site and contains all the information on the Music in the Historic Quarter project. Music in the Historic Quarter consists of The Contemporary Music Centre Outdoor Music Trail and an Event Programme. The Music Trail contains works by eight Irish composers playing in five outdoor locations. There is an inner trail and an extended trail. Along the inner trail music is playing outdoors on an ongoing basis between 1pm and 4pm, 21 August - 1 September 2010. The extended trial incorporates two additional locations in which the music can be listened to in situ with a smartphone (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and Android devices). In order to access the extended trail, smartphone users should visit www.cmc.ie/musictrail for the user guide information on how to download and use the free application needed to listen to each of the works at the trail locations. When they arrive near a trail point, the music will automatically play on their devices. They can experience the trail at any time across the ten days of Music in the Historic Quarter. The extended trail employs the very latest in location-based, augmented reality technology for mobile phones. "This is a mixed-reality music trail that combines real and virtual sound sources placed in different locations around the city's historical quarter. Each source broadcasts a piece of contemporary music by an Irish composer. Despite the use of location-based technology, we've tried to keep it open to everyone and so there are essentially two ways to experience the trail." says Brian Solon, Music Trail Developer with The Contemporary Music Centre. The Contemporary Music Centre Outdoor Music Trail is free. Music in the Historic Quarter is made possible through the funding support of Dublin City Council and the Summer in Dublin programme www.dublincity.ie as well as the ongoing funding support of the Contemporary Music Centre by the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. The Contemporary Music Centre is Ireland's national archive and resource centre for new music, supporting and developing the work of composers throughout the Republic and Northern Ireland. It is used on a national and international basis by performers, composers, promoters and members of the public interested in finding out more about music in Ireland.
