Two Concerts in London, Autumn 2009

new music::new Ireland, an international initiative of The Contemporary Music Centre Ireland, visits London for the first time with two exciting concerts of new music in October and November 2009.

With new talent emerging on the contemporary music scene all the time, these events showcase Irish composers and performers in vibrant, cutting-edge programmes.

The concerts, which are linked but contrasting, present two facets of new Irish music for violin and piano and are part of the Out Hear Monday night series at King's Place, London.

In Solos and Duos for Violin and Piano: 1 (12 October, 8.00-9.00pm), new music specialists Darragh Morgan (violin) and Mary Dullea (piano) play cutting-edge contemporary Irish music. In addition to a piece by well-known composer Gerald Barry, their programme includes three premieres and ranges across the styles and generations.

A month later, in Solos and Duos for Violin and Piano: 2 (16 November, 8.00-9.00pm) Ioana Petcu-Colan (violin) and Michael McHale (piano) explore the more lyrical side of contemporary Irish music, taking as a starting point the individual sounds worlds of the violin and piano. Their programme features balanced pairs of works by four established composers.

new music::new Ireland is presented by The Contemporary Music Center in association with Culture Ireland as part of a programme of high profile events on the international stage, including Carnegie Hall, New York, last October.

The Contemporary Music Centre is Ireland's national archive and promotion agency for new music, supporting and developing the work of Irish composers nationally and internationally. It is funded by the Arts Council/ An Chomhairle Ealaíon; the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Culture Ireland.

Violinist Darragh Morgan enjoys a diverse and rewarding career. He has led world class international ensembles such as Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, Musik Fabrik and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and is a member of award winning chamber ensembles, the Smith Quartet and the Fidelio Trio.

A sought-after interpreter of new music, Dullea is much in demand as a soloist and chamber musician and has performed throughout Ireland, England, Europe, USA, Hong Kong and South Africa. Dullea is a member of the Fidelio Trio.

An accomplished soloist and an experienced and much-respected chamber musician Petcu-Colan is dedicated to her role in increasing audience awareness of new music, particularly that of Irish composers. She has performed commissions and world premieres on radio and television working with composers such as Arvo Pärt and Peteris Vasks.

McHale's performing career encompasses solo recital, concerto and chamber music appearances and he enjoys playing both core and contemporary repertoire. Future engagements include concerto performances with the Hallé and Ulster Orchestras, a chamber music concert in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and a solo recital début in the Wigmore Hall, London.

King's Place is a creative centre within five minutes' walk of King's Cross-St Pancras, presenting music, paintings and sculpture from around the world. There are two beautiful new concert halls, with concerts and events taking place nightly and cafes, bars and fine dining on the waterfront of Regent's Canal. In addition to providing the headquarters for The Guardian, The London Sinfonietta and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, there are two art galleries within the building, Pangolin London, which is run by the renowned Gloucestershire-based sculpture foundry, and Kings Place Gallery, a major new London gallery promoting painting and sculpture by international artists. Both have a rolling programme of free exhibitions with many works for sale.
