The Art of Sound — a Glimpse into the Creativity of Some Irish Composers

18 July 2007

Want to meet some of Ireland's new music makers? See what they look like and hear how they sound?

The Art of Sound exhibition on view during the Kilkenny Arts Festival, 11 - 19 August 2007 offers the opportunity to do just that. Presented by the Contemporary Music Centre this multi-media exhibition looks at new music making from the first idea through to the final performance. The creative process usually takes place behind closed doors, but this exhibition brings it to life through striking photographs of the composers and images of their work.

The Art of Sound features photographer Eugene Langan's dramatic and perceptive photographs of Irish composers. Original manuscripts by Irish composers feature alongside graphic scores, which are visual artworks as well as music. An audio-guide narrated by Eamonn Lawlor, RTÉ lyric fm, brings to life the music that is displayed, leading to a truly unique and rich experience for the visitor.

A new music concert takes place on 17 August 2007 as part of the exhibition. Award-winning composer and vocalist Jennifer Walshe will present a variety of compositions for solo voice, with visuals, which demonstrate the wide variety of notation used by composers today.

Originally devised by the Contemporary Music Centre in partnership with the Music Department of University College Cork, The Art of Sound exhibition and concert at the Kilkenny Arts Festival is made possible through the support of the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, the Kilkenny Arts Festival and Rothe House.

Leading Irish violinist, Catherine Leonard officially opens the exhibition at 5.00pm on Saturday 11 August 2007.
