The Influence of James Joyce on Irish and International Composers

Dublin, 9 June 2004

The Contemporary Music Centre is very pleased to announce a seminar as part of the 'ReJoyce in Music' series of events which has been organized in conjunction with Temple Bar Outdoors: Diversions Festival 2004 and the Association of Irish Composers. International Joyce scholar Scott Klein, currently Associate Professor of English in Wake Forest University and German musicologist Axel Klein (no relation) will discuss aspects of Joyce and his influence on music. Axel Klein, who has written extensively on Irish nineteenth and twentieth century music, will focus on composers Geoffrey Molyneux Palmer, E. J. Moeran, Brian Boydell, Gerard Victory, Eric Sweeney and Frank Corcoran using the theme, 'The distant music mournfully murmereth...'

Scott Klein focusing on Boulez, Berio and Cage amongst others will link text and music with examples from the Sirens episode of Ulysses (which appear in Berio's Thema (Omaggio à Joyce), and an example of a John Cage mesostic (a kind of acrostic) on Joyce's name which forms part of the text of his tape piece Roaratorio.
