Colin Mawby Awarded Top Honors in Waging Peace Through Singing Competition, Oregon, USA

Dublin, 24 May 2002

Irish composer Colin Mawby’s choral work Prayer of Forgiveness for SATB Choir, published by Kevin Mayhew, has just been awarded Top Honors in Category Two, Mixed Chamber Chorus, of the Waging Peace Through Singing Competition, Oregon, USA. Altogether there were eight Top Honors awards made in this category.

The Carlton Savage Endowment for International Relations and Peace invited composers of all nationalities to create choral music on the theme of waging peace. The purpose of the competition was to encourage the creation and dissemination of an international repertoire of choral music on peace-related texts.

Altogether there were 700 entries for the 10 different categories from over 30 countries. At least one work from each category will receive a premiere performance and monetary award. The works selected in categories one and two will be premiered by the Oregon Repertory Singers (Gill Seeley, Director) at the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium in July 2003. The two composers selected from categories one and two will be invited to attend the premieres and to give presentations about their music to the symposium participants.

To promote future performances, all of the submitted compositions will be listed on the website with information about how choruses may obtain each work. See www.iwagepeace.com for further details.
