Music Copyright and Contracts – Free Talk at CMC

Dublin, 13 May 2002

The new CMC monthly talks series continues on Tuesday, 28 May 2002 with a talk on copyright and contracts.

Donal McGuirk, Manager of Member Services, IMRO and Linda Scales, Solicitor, will give this talk. Linda is a solicitor specialising in copyright, with extensive experience in general commercial law, including contracts. She has a particular interest in law and the arts, and lectures and writes on legal aspects of arts practice. The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) is the body that administers music copyrights in Ireland. It issues licences to venues, broadcasters etc and collects and distributes royalties for public performances of copyright music.

This is the first of CMC’s practical, career-oriented sessions, aimed at composers and those involved in music, both professional and amateur. Each session will include a question and answer session with all contributions welcome.

CMC’s talk series addresses musical as well as practical issues. The first event, which took place on 25 April, was a birthday interview by Michael Dungan with John Kinsella, celebrating his seventieth birthday this year. On 11 June, Northern Irish composer Deirdre McKay, who is turning thirty, will speak about her music and experience as a young composer, and on 24 September James Wilson will be in conversation with TV producer Anne Makower.

Other practical career-oriented sessions in the series include a talk on what composers can do to help promote their work in October and a demonstration of Sibelius music software on 19 November 2002.

All talks take place in the CMC library from 6.30-7.30pm and admission is free. Due to limited space places should be booked in advance with Karen Hennessy, Promotion Manager. For further information on any of these talks please contact Karen Hennessy at The Contemporary Music Centre, 19 Fishamble Street, Dublin 8.
