Dublin, 15 April 2002

Irish Composer John Kinsella in conversation with Michael Dungan
6.30pm – 7.30pm, Thursday, 25 April 2002, in the Library at CMC

The Contemporary Music Centre has initiated a new series of monthly talks. This new talks series will include Irish composers speaking about their music as well as talks given by experts in various legal and technical areas of concern to those working in music.

The first talk in the composer’s talk series will take place on 25 April with Irish composer John Kinsella in conversation with journalist Michael Dungan.

Born in Dublin, John Kinsella for many years combined composition with administration until be resigned from the post of Head of Music at RTE in 1988 to devote his time to composition. Since then he has written eight symphonies; a second violin concerto; a fourth string quartet and other works. On 15 March 2002 his new cello concerto, commissioned by Daniel Dultzin, the previous Mexican Ambassador to Ireland, for Carlos Prieto, with funds provided by the Arts Council, was premiered by the National Symphony Orchestra in the National Concert Hall. Kinsella’s works have been recorded on the Chandos and Marco Polo labels. He is a member of Aosdana.

Other Irish composers who will feature later in the year include Deirdre McKay on 11 June and James Wilson in conversation with TV producer Anne Makower on 24 September, amongst others.

These composer talks are aimed at a wide audience. They will include a question and answer session thereby offering audiences an opportunity to engage directly with composers on their life and work.

The practical talk series will perhaps be of more interest to composers or those professionally engaged in Music. The first talk in this series will focus on copyright and contracts and will take place at the end of May. Later this year, in the autumn, there will be a session on what composers can do to help promote their own work and a demonstration of Sibelius music software.

All talks take place in the CMC library from 6.30pm – 7.30pm and admission is free. Due to limited space places should be booked in advance with Karen Hennessy tel (01) 673 1922.

This event is made possible by the continued support of The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
