West Cork Young Composers' Awards The West Cork Chamber Music Festival has announced the winners of its 2009 Young Composers' Awards. Composers under 30 years of age were invited to submit works of between 5 and 8 minutes duration for performance at this year's Festival. Successful entrants were Hugh Martin Boyle for his Piano Trio, Amanda Feery for her string trio, Protons, Electrons and Streaks of Paint, and Bartholomew Callinan's string quartet, For Four Strings. The prizewinners will have their pieces performed by the young musicians on the Festival's masterclass programme on Sunday 28 June at 2.30pm, followed by discussion between composers and musicians, chaired by the Festival's Composer-in-Residence, Lera Auerbach. The Young Composers' Awards are now in their second year. 2008 prize winner Michael Doherty's piece, String Quartet No. 2, so impressed the judges that it was selected to be performed by the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet at 8.00pm on Friday 3 July in Bantry House.
