Kevin Volans at 60
CMC marks composer Kevin Volans's 60th birthday with a reception after Crash Ensemble's concert on 9 April. The concert, in Crash’s Free State series, is curated by Kevin Volans, who features works by young Irish composers with, as centrepiece, the premiere of a new work of his own. As well as performing with the ensemble, Volans has chosen works by Jennifer Walshe, Simon O’Connor and Jonathan Nangle and these will be played together with his own Nine Beginnings and Into Darkness. Crash has had a fruitful relationship with Volans in recent years, premiering works such as 1000 Bars and Joining up the Dots, which were written especially for the ensemble. This 2009 Free State concert is Crash Ensemble’s fourth annual showcase of new music from Ireland. Always an adventure of the unexpected, Free State has previously premiered new works by Gerald Barry and Julie Feeney among other unique voices of the new generation of Irish composers.
