         
Volans at 60
Two concerts marking the 60th birthday of Kevin Volans take place at IMMA in July. The players are members of Ensemble Madrid, a contemporary music group from Spain and SISU, a percussion ensemble from Norway. The central work in both programmes is Chakra, Volans's spectacular percussion piece, which will be played on Saturday 4 July and again on Sunday 5 July. Volans has also written a new work, No Translation - Six Sketches after Juan Uslé for string sextet and percussion, which receives its premiere. The first concert also includes the Irish premiere of his Quartet No. 6. Other works to be performed include Irish and world premieres of pieces by composers Arild Suáre, José Luis Turina and Alberto Iglesias. The events are supported by the Embassies of Spain, Norway and South Africa. Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Saturday 4 July 2009 (8.00pm) and Sunday 5 July 2009 (12.30pm).
