National Music Symposium
Knowing the score, a symposium on Local Authorities and music, takes place in Dublin on 24 March. The symposium marks the publication of the research report, Local Authorities and Music: Knowing the Score, written by Ailbhe Kenny, research fellow in a two-year partnership initiative between Sligo County Council, Wexford County Council and St Patrick's College Drumcondra, through the Arts Council's Local Partnership Scheme 2006-2008. The day features key expert and stakeholder responses to the profile of Local Authorities' work in music, and includes a keynote presentation from Marc Jaffrey, Music Manifesto, England. Other speakers include Martin Drury of the Arts Council. Also featured is a performance by the Irish Baroque Orchestra with soloists Sarah Sexton (baroque violin) and Gerry O'Connor (fiddle) of Ardee Dances by Rachel Holstead, which was commissioned by Louth County Council. A Nursery Rhyme Cantata by Nick Page will be performed by Aspiro (formerly Carlow Young Artists Choir) under conductor Mary Amond O'Brien. The symposium is expected to be of interest to LA arts departments, music development/resource agencies, musicians and composers, researchers in music and cultural policy, music teachers, commissioning bodies, and arts centre/resource organisations and music administrators.
